Chapter Eight

“I need to see him.” Fen straightened to his full height, hoping to intimidate the younger wolf. “I have to make sure he’s still alive for when Eric gets here.”

“You don’t need to do anything.” Tanner’s eyes flashed red as he craned his neck up to meet Fen’s gaze. “And don’t worry, I’ll take responsibility for Kyron when Eric arrives.” He handed Fen’s forged papers back to him. “You can also tell Lydia that it doesn’t matter how well-respected a doctor is, he’s still not going to get in to see Kyron.”

Fen pressed his lips together in frustration. The little weasel was going to do anything to make sure that he took credit for Josh’s capture, including forbidding anyone to see him. There wasn’t much time, and Fen didn’t have the patience to deal with pack politics.

“I heard that there was a sick wolf in there that needed medical attention. I need to check on him.”

Tanner narrowed his gaze. “Which pack did you say you belonged to, again?”

“St. Elias. In the Canadian Rockies.”

“Funny, you don’t sound Canadian.”

“You don’t sound like you’re in charge.” Fen shook his head. “You’re wasting my time, here.” Fen started for the door.

Tanner put his hand on Fen’s chest, stopping his progress. “And you came this far south because…”

Fen sighed. This was getting him nowhere. All Tanner had to do was a little background check to know that Fen wasn’t a doctor, and the St. Elias Pack leader, Logan, would love nothing more than to see him dead. “Look, if you do this for me now, I’ll put in a good word with Eric.”

Tanner’s brow rose with suspicion. “How so?”

“Eric and I are old friends. I think a well-placed word could tip the scales in your favor.”

Tanner hesitated, clearly weighing the option of showing his superiority with possibly gaining a boon with Eric. It was promotion time, after all. Stupid wolves. They were so concerned with power and rank. Still, he could work this to his advantage.

Fen decided to press. “If you let me see the prisoner now, I’ll do what I can to make sure Eric favors you when it comes time for promotions.”

Tanner thought about it. “I want to be second in command.”

Sweet mother of— “This is not my pack. Therefore I can’t guarantee anything like that. What you ask is impossible.”

“Eric is to make me second in command, or no deal.”

The stupid wolf wasn’t thinking clearly. How would Fen manage that? Fen pressed his lips together in frustration. He might as well promise Tanner the world. All he needed was a few moments alone with Josh. By the time Tanner figured out he’d been duped, Fen would be long gone.

“Okay, you have a deal.”

After a tense moment, the guard nodded and stepped aside. Fen strode into the room and shut the door behind him.

The room was dark, lit only by the sunlight that trailed in through the window on the far wall. Instruments of torture lay strewn around the room, and a large metal bed frame stood in its center.
